Primitive reflexes are automatic movement patterns we’re all born with. These reflexes should become integrated—or go dormant—by around 12 months of age, making room for more mature, voluntary movements to develop.
Here's Why That Matters
But when reflexes don’t integrate properly, they can seriously interfere with a child’s:
Balance and Coordination
Focus and Learning
Emotional Regulation
Body Awareness and Control
Social Interactions
Instead of building a strong foundation for mobility and stability, the child develops compensations and maladaptive movement patterns—often leading to confusion, frustration, and developmental delays that impact every area of their lives.
This is What We Can Do
By addressing these reflexes with play-based exercises, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, parents, and educators can help children build the skills they missed—setting them up for lasting growth and a brighter future!
And we can have fun while doing it!
